So a weekend in the fair city of Bath with the added bonus of seeing Norah Jones at the same time. It’s been nearly twenty years since we first saw Norah Jones at the Hammersmith Odeon. One thing was true of both gigs I was the only one that whooped when the great Jesse Harris got name checked in each show.
Unusual to be at all seated show in a theatre but a welcome relief after a day of travelling and walking. I was surprised at the mixture of the audience and was expecting a predominantly middle aged crowd but there were enough younger people there who could have only been children when the debut album came out in 2002.
My overall review of the show was safe. The band were good but it all felt a little restrained. Jones’ voice is a wonderful instrument but she seemed to keep it in check and only really let loose on a handful of occasions, but when she did wow. This was especially true on the Puss n Boots song ‘Don’t know what it means’ which had more of a country feel than the usual jazz lite elements of her music. Obviously the classic such as 'Come away with Me' and set closer 'Don't Know Why' were exceptional.
So on the whole a fine show performed by excellent musicians without them really letting their hair down but it won’t live long in the memory especially after so many great shows already seen this year.
Keep on jazz soft rockin’ y’all
ps apologies for the crap photos, didn't have my camera.
