Well that was fun. A rather late and short review for this evening. Back to my favourite small venue in London and first up is Tapir. Not heard a note from them before tonight and I was a little nervous as they amble on stage looking like year 2 art school students with the lead singer having some form of bird mask on his head. However I needn’t have worried they were really rather good with some nice tunes and once mask removed the singer had a large range in his voice that reminded me of the guy from Vampire Weekend but musically of the short live Guillemots.
Onto main act and like Lime Garden at the same venue last week Prima Queen are a new band with no album released yet just some singles. One of 2022’s music trends is definitely female fronted quirky pop guitar bands with obviously the runaway success of Wet Leg leading the charge. But Prima Queen are right up there in terms of quality songs and certainly live they are an excellent band putting smiles on everyone’s faces here tonight.
Prima Queen are led by Louise Macphail and Kristin McFadden as co-writers and share the vocals producing some wonderful harmonies to boot. The band are tight tonight with Heledd Owen on drums and Kitty Drummond on bass providing the rhythmic foundation for the two leads to shine.
Its feel good quirky British pop at its heart albeit with an American influence and it’s a short sharp set of their singles and a couple of new ones to boot. A great night and I look forward to hearing the album and seeing them again next year.
Keep on quirky pop rockin’ y’all
