With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Just the one on this New Year’s Eve show for my look back trip down memory lane for you down the years.
2006, Kyle Minogue, Wembley Arena, London
I’ve always found New Year’s Eve a bit of an anti-climax with people trying too hard to have a good time. This year when we saw this gig advertised we thought it could be fun, no drama and promises to be a good night.
So Anne and I drive off to Wembley and first up its Bjorn Again who deliver their polished act superbly and why wouldn’t they. They’ve been doing it for years now and must be the easiest job in the world playing all those songs everyone loves.
Next up it’s the queen herself Kylie. She is massive in the gay community and I am sure I’m one of the few straight men here tonight. It’s the one and only time I have had my arse touched up at a gig.
Onto Kylie herself, let’s be honest she isn’t the greatest singer with her helium tinged voice but the tunes are all good, easy to sing and dance to and that’s what we did for two hours counting down to midnight. It’s the Showgirl tour and all the hits are there from the really early stuff and bringing it right bang up to date.
The show is spectacular with various costume changes, complex dance routines that you expect from a female pop star these days.
We ring in the New Year, find our car and drive home along empty streets and reflect on a great night’s entertainment but still remains the only NYE gig I have been to. That’s it for this year’s review but as we are still in lockdown the trips down memory lane will return in the New Year.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon but I have had several gigs slated for early 2021 already being moved to the back end so that will take it to a full twelve months at least between gigs.
