Change of pace from Tuesday’s poptastic night with Wet Leg to tonight’s show with Dublin’s finest Thumper. Often bracketed in with Fontaines DC also from that fair city it’s not a valid comparison. What sets Thumper apart is actually the quality of the songs and the four part harmonies which despite the noise still stand out above the cacophony of the overall sound.
Crammed into the tiny Windmill in the middle of a residential street on Brixton Hill, Birds Eye Andy and I take our place with a decent view of the small stage at one corner of this club.
What follows is a tight set of heavy rock tinged pop. It’s a massive sound with three guitarists and two drummers who are shoe horned onto the tiny stage. It’s not one for tinnitus sufferers as my ears are still ringing. But it’s more than noise. The songs are very good and you only need to look around at the audience who are all nodding their heads, stomping their feet and clapping their hands throughout.
The band left everything on the stage tonight and sometimes off of it as front man Oisin Leahy Furlong, takes a wander into the crowd on more than one occasion.
Its breathless stuff and any Halloween cobwebs are blown away into next week and the band sets off some early musical fireworks. Another great night and as Andy mentions two different gigs this but what they do share in common is no frills, no encore just getting down and playing.
Keep on rock and rollin y’all.
