Date night with my good lady up in the big smoke. I’d been looking forward to this show for quite a while and those that know me will realise that this is not my usual fare. One of the main reasons I wanted to go this was not only Christina’s stunning voice, but to see a full on pop show. We got that is spades with costume changes, an impressive set, awesome light show and enough confetti cannons to sink a ship.
Sadly the downside to this sort of event is the wall of phone screens you have to look past to enjoy the spectacle in front of you. Now I take a few snaps to put on the blog but I can’t understand the need for people to constantly video the songs. It was so bad that the guy next to me recorded the whole set alternating his raised arms as each one got tired. I would have been royally pissed off to have been behind him. Luckily for us we have good seats near the front and so it wasn’t unbearable.
Such is the back catalogue of Christina that she can start with one of her biggest hits Dirrty. Its sets the scene for the whole show with stunning vocals, amazing lights, and vigorous dancing. It’s followed up with eighty minutes of pop classics. It’s surprising how many of these songs you know especially if you are a casual fan like myself. Hits like ‘genie in a bottle’, Beautiful’, ‘what a girl wants’ and ‘Aint no other man’ just keep on coming.
As mentioned at the top, the show itself was stunning with fireworks, lasers, video montages from throughout her twenty year career as well as the usual lighting paraphernalia. Obviously though her voice is front and centre and has not lost any of its power. It certainly is a stunning instrument and it’s interesting for me to see how she manages it through the show taking subtle breaks, allowing the backing singers to take some of the lifting, but when she switches it on just wow.
The band are tight and a word for the dancers who barely leave the stage throughout the show and must be super human fit.
In summary a superb pop show that delivered everything I expected. As a complete contrast my next gig will be a low key affair with Torres at Bush Hall.
Keep on pop rockin’ y’all. .
