As contrasts go this is the polar opposite of my last gig a week or so ago with The Flaming Lips. Tonight at the Green Note with fifty other souls there are no inflatable robots, confetti guns or lasers just one man and an acoustic guitar. One thing these two experiences do share is a thoroughly good night out full of great tunes.
For some inexplicable reason Leger still operates under the radar over here. With a great back catalogue of brilliant story telling songs, an accomplished guitarist and a voice somewhere between Dylan and Danny George Wilson there is no reason why he should not be playing bigger rooms than this. The benefit I guess for us though is we get to see him in these intimate venues without distraction to really absorb the songs. I found myself several times through the set motionless forgetting to breathe such was the spell of the songs.
A nice bonus for those there tonight was two sets taking in songs, old, new and a choice cover or two too with Jerry bringing new life to an old Cohen song 'the Law'. It’s a relaxed evening and Jerry is comfortable with his between song banter giving insight to some of the songs performed.
On a night when it’s difficult to pin point highlights I will have a stab with ‘Reclusive Revisions’ and ‘Corner Light’ to name a couple.
But it’s a super night of classically delivered folk in front of a knowledgeable, attentive crowd and he’s a must see next time over here.
Keep on folk rockin’ y’all
