With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years.
May is typically a very busy month for gigs being part of the usual album release cycle but there’s just the one today for my trip along memory lane for you down the years.
2019, Yola Carter, 100 Club, London
We hop, skip and jump back 12 months for this one show last year on this day which I reviewed here at the time. It got a lukewarm review at the time and I stand by that. Yola has the most amazing voice and has moved lock, stock and barrel to a more country feel since her beginnings in the great Phantom Limb. My worry is that part of her unique gift has been slightly too polished with this shift. Of course there are still moments but it feels a little too safe for me.
It didn’t help this evening as my football team proceeded to balls up the end of the season both generally in the league and more specifically lost the Europa Cup final that evening.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
