With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
A couple today for my trip down memory lane for you down the years
1992 David Byrne, Brixton Academy, London
Well we go away back nearly thirty years for this David Byrne gig on the Uh-Oh tour which is a fine and possibly my favourite Byrne solo album. Joining me are John and Graham and tonight wasn’t a massive theatrical show like the recent tour but more of a full on rock show. Looking at the setlist its very much a mixture of assorted tracks form his two solo albums, a handful of Talking Heads ‘hits’ and a couple of covers like ‘Sympathy for the Devil’. It’s an epic show and of course classics like ‘Road to nowhere’ and a particularly aggressive ‘Psycho Killer’ steal the show. Brilliant stuff.
2013, Taj Mahal, Under the Bridge, London
Not much to add about this show that I didn’t say the other day when reviewing the great Taj Mahal. Whilst its sticks in the throat I have to admit Under the Bridge is a fine venue sat at one corner under Chelsea’s stadium. Its modern but with a great sound system, good sight lines, clean toilets and well stocked bar.
Tonight the master is still going strong despite topping seventy and he is backed by a top quality band who more than match him with their chops. Fine stuff.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all
