With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years.
May is typically a very busy month for gigs being part of the usual album release cycle but there’s just a couple today for my trip down memory lane for you down the years.
1994, Dr. John, Jazz Café, London
We are going way back for this one for our time seeing Dr. John. I would guess it was John, Graham and myself. As usual the Jazz Café was packed and I’m sure were crammed to one side of the stage with a limited view. I’m sure it was a great show but any other specifics are vague and certainly doesn’t stand out like the more recent show we saw him at ‘Under the bridge’ which was amazing.
2006, Josh Rouse, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
Another show for Josh Rouse touring on the back of ‘Subtitulo’ an album which to be fair doesn’t last long in the memory. Looking at setlists around this time the split of tracks is between this album, ‘Nashville’ and the classic ‘1972’ and it obviously the latter tracks that stand out. As I have mentioned before all Josh Rouse shows are unfortunately compared to a fantastic night in Dingwalls in 2002.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
