With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Just a couple today here for my trip down memory lane for you down the years
1999, the Black Crowes, Shepherds Bush Empire
I’ve seen the Black Crowes a number of times and they can be very hit or miss depending on whether they are up for it or not or probably how much of the Mary Jane they may have consumed. Tonight though they were very much on it. This would have been the ‘By your side’ tour and I think Audley Freed had joined for what is always a fluid line-up essentially supporting the Robinson brothers.
The set draws nicely from across the back catalogue with of course plenty from arguably their finest hour ‘Southern Harmony and Musical Companion’. When they are this good they are certainly one of the best blues rock bands out there. Certainly a groove band if you and they happen to be in the same groove they take you places musically which very few acts can often reach.
Top night with a band that clicked this time around.
2019, Jenny Lewis, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
I reviewed this gig previously on the blog here and there’s little more to add. Loved Jenny Lewis right back to her Rilo Kiley days and tonight was no exception with a fine show.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
