No church tonight but the behemoth that is the O2 for this twice rescheduled date, the ticket which we bought in 2019. After waiting this long we were not going to let a train strike get in the way.
We made decision that after the annus horribilis of 2016 when the likes of Bowie and Prince died we would make the effort, and pay the price, to see the legends if they tour before it’s too late. Ms Ross falls into that category.
At 78 years old she still has the moves, the grace, the glamour and more importantly the voice. It would be churlish to criticise the odd blip but in the main her voice held strong supported by her band and four backing singers.
The set is split broadly in three combined with costume changes that works almost chronologically with the show openers a run through of a few Supremes hit which wouldn’t have looked out of place as the encore. The rest of the set is then choice cuts and covers until present day and her album from last year ‘Thank You’
The stage and light show are impressive and it was nice to see a compendium of photos from throughout her long and illustrious career.
What more to say, a great show, a bit cheesy in places and maybe I would have chosen a few different tracks rather than some of the covers she did, but tick this off as a goodie. Highlights for me were probably the contrast of ‘Theme form Mahogany’ followed by ‘Aint no Mountain high enough’. I am sure her legends set will go down a storm at Glasto this weekend.
Keep on soul rockin’ y’all.
