I am quite late to the game with this band as after three albums in I am just joining their psych pop party with their latest release ‘Can you really find me’. Obviously, the set leans heavily to the new album and what a fine album it is with its catchy psych pop tunes and lush production that really highlights John Pelant’s unique voice. It’s a slightly lower in range to Band of Horses’ front man Ben Bridwell and there some familiarities with that band although certainly not as rock oriented. It’s an album that you need to listen to all the way through as it takes you off on a dreamy journey probably down the west coast of America just as the sun is going down.
It’s a simple four-piece touring band tonightand assisted by some electronic enhancement they attempt to recreate the kaleidoscopic musical feel of the album and just about pull it off. There’s ample space for four-part harmonies to evoke a more contemporary CSNY vibe but its Pelant who steals the show whether this is up front on guitar or sat at keyboards providing a more mellow vibe.
With me having to play catch up on the back catalogue, the highlights for me were clearly tracks from the new album that I am more familiar with such as ‘Mexico’ and set closer ‘Ribboned Skies’.
My only criticism was that its over in an hour and I am rudely awakened by my dream like state by the harsh realities of the world with delayed trains and an Arsenal defeat. That aside my brief trip to that perfect pop place in the Night Moves world was worth that disappointment.
Keep on psych country pop rockin' y'all
