His last few albums have regularly been voted in best of lists and rightly so. He is regularly name-checked a lot by other like-minded musicians and tonight he is supported by John Calvin Abney both as an opening act and also on guitar through the main set. I was not familiar with him before but will certainly be checking him out. He had some good songs and is an excellent guitarist to boot.
With no new album to promote we are treated to a selection of tracks from the last three albums. The songs are simple and expertly performed by the twin acoustic leads. It’s a great mix of a commentary on the state of America and personal stories with little in between chat with the audience.
Moreland possesses one of those deep southern voices and sounds a little like a young Steve Earle. He is a big presence on stage and the audience are respectful throughout listening intently to every word, rapt in the stories unfolding on stage.
Highlights tonight are unsurprisingly two of my favourite tracks ‘American Flags in Black and white’ and set close ‘Break my heart sweetly’. It’s all over too briefly after 70 minutes but what a treat tonight with the finest Americana you will see delivered by a man at the top of his song writing game.
Until the next time keep on rockin y’all.
