It’s back to the hotbed of alternative music, the Windmill in Brixton tonight. A tiny room that more than makes up for its lack of size with its atmosphere. Always a lively show and tonight was no exception with US punksters Mannequin Pussy. Its certainly a complete contrast to the ethereal beauty of Weyes Blood on Monday night to this full on post punk show.
A word first for support act Sulk who grew into their short set to provide an adrenaline pumping 30 minute showcase for their infectious tunes.
I have to say I’m a late convert to Mannequin Pussy and their eclectic sound. Equal parts power pop, melody driven songs and pure punk rock. This is very clear on record but the lines are slightly more blurred live where the punk energy is to the fore but the craft of the songs is still apparent lurking under the surface full of catchy hooks and driving rhythms.
It’s a short sweet fifty minute assault on the senses and the energy on stage is matched in the crowd after they got warmed up. No song out stays it’s welcome and segues straight in to the next two minute wall of sound cacophony.
A thoroughly entertaining show and look forward to seeing them again in the inevitable bigger room I assume supporting their new album next year.
Keep on power pop punk rockin’ y’all
