With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Just a trio of shows for my look back trip down memory lane for you down the years.
2019, Sarah Darling, Union Chapel, London
It’s a lovely Christmas show with Sarah Darling and friends such as the Wandering Hearts and Ward Thomas to celebrate the festive season with a mix of Christmas songs and Darling originals. A lovely night reviewed here at the time.
2015, Eugene Hideaway Bridges, the Borderline, London
Great blues evening with one of the old masters reviewed here at the time.
2004, Mark Lanegan, Astoria, London
An oldie for me and Alex in much missed London venue The Astoria. If you’ve never seen Lanegan live then don’t expect between song banter, light shows, dancing or any other form of performance aside from him hanging onto his microphone stand for the full ninety minutes.
It’s the ‘Bubblegum’ tour and the album dominates the set but there’s still plenty of room for select tracks from the great ‘Field Songs’. I am a sucker for these dark laconic brooding singers like Cave and Kozelek for example but Lanegan does hold a special place.
Fine stuff from the king of black.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon but with the new lockdown my last chance of a gig disappeared this month and I have now had my first gig of 2021 cancelled so that will take it to a full twelve months at least between gigs.
Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
