With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
A couple today for my trip down memory lane for you down the years.
2011, Pulp, Brixton Academy, London
A reunion show of sorts and having not seen them back in their heyday we weren’t going to miss this one as John and I make out way down south to Brixton. It’s a theatrical preamble with phrases being projected on the big video screen behind the stage for the crowd to sing back.
Very much a greatest hits show with of course most of their pop classic ‘Different Class’ being played and choice cuts from their other albums. As an added bonus we have the great Richard Hawley on stage for most of the set too to add to the Sheffield flavour.
It’s a lovely trip back nearly twenty years to the mid-nineties for a Pulp hit fest. Great stuff and just a shame I couldn’t get tickets for the stalls but the circle.
2016, Margo Price, Scala, London
I reviewed this show at the time here. This was the first time Anne and I had seen Margo and what a fantastic show. The band were on fire and were literally so hot they blew the electrics and lights in the venue. Undeterred the band carried on illuminated by just the lights from the phones of the fans. I have been lucky enough to see Margo a couple of times and since and she never fails to deliver a knockout show.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
