With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Three today with a couple reviewed before and so just a quick recap for my trip down memory lane for you down the years and it’s a quickie as all have been reviewed before.
2013, Joe Louis Walker, the Garage, London
I’ve seen Joe Louis Walker a number of times but this one really stands out amongst the crowd as one of his best. Hitting seventy now he is still producing top quality blues as witness by John, Graham and myself tonight. I don’t know the setlist but it would have been a few from the latest album plus a greatest hits set from across his vast back catalogue.
Walker has a cleanness and precision of note in the style of Robert Cray that is perfect. But it’s not so precise or polished that it takes any of the emotion and soul out of the music. He is simply one of the best. He's got soul, he's got the blues and he can rock too.
2016, Phil Cook, the Keep, Guildford
Keeping it local in Guildford that was reviewed at the time here. Not much to add but a great intimate show from Phil in this tiny pub in Guildford and fair play to the promoter who keeps getting these American artists to play here.
2018, Ron Gallo, the Moth Club, London
Just a skip back a couple of years ago for this show by the quirky but talented Ron Gallo that was reviewed at the time here. A funking good night was had by all well certainly me and Monster Energy Drink Andy.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
