After getting over the awkward conversation and having to clarify to my wife that this was a gig when the word divorce was written on our calendar me and my trusted gig master in arms, Andy venture to The Social in the good old west end just off Oxford Street
A small room holding around 150, it’s a long narrow room and getting there early is advised. Tonight was no exception especially to see support act Boy Bovis who delivered a short five song set of the finest folk tinged songs with an exquisite voice closing with a sublime John Martyn cover.
Onto Divorce. This four piece from Nottingham are the very definition of the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They are just perfect together, the connection between the two leads is evident and the show has a nice relaxed loose feel that ramps the show’s level up a notch or two. Equal parts, folk, country, pop, blues, grunge and a bunch of other genres in between they blend them all together to produce their unique sound. The twin lead vocals work so well together complementing their individual voices into one single entity.
With the release of their second EP just a few days ago we are treated in equal measure to that record, the debut EP and a clutch of very new unreleased songs too. What a joy this show was from start to finish. There was no lull in proceedings and the songs flowed perfectly together and the new songs slotted in well.
There was no highlight for me as this was a smile on your face from start to finish gig and one of the most enjoyable this year easily making my top ten.
I look forward to seeing them again next year if you can get ticket. Definitely a band to watch.
Keep on folkie, grungy pop rockin’ y’all
