Looking like Mario and Luigi’s lost brother bedecked in boiler suit and cap it’s here where the similarities end and we are treated to a raucous eighty minutes of art pop, rock n roll, garage, punk, call it what you will. An enigmatic front man you can’t keep your eyes off of him, much in the same way that David Byrne draws your attention. That’s not to take anything away from his amazing rhythm section and backing vocalists, bassist Joe Bisirri and drummer Dylan Sevey who drive each song with a relentless force. They are also joined tonight on stage by a keyboardist on a number of tracks to further fill the sound.
The energy on stage translates into the crowd and I have never seen a mosh pit at The Moth Club before but tonight there was not a toe untapped or a head unbobbed to the beat along with the boogie brigade at the front dancing all night.
With no new album to promote the set is still taken largely from his last ‘Heavy Meta’ with a couple of new ones thrown in. ‘Young Lady, You're Scaring Me’ is an obvious highlight for me but its breathless stuff where you are no more than a couple of minutes from another great track. There’s light too to the shade and it’s not all breakneck guitar rock as Gallo can show his mellow side and really does possess a fine voice too.
It could be argued that he’s man born out of time and while this is not seventies CBGB this style of kick ass music is probably as relevant today to at least forget about the crap going on around us in the world and just rock the funk out for an hour or so.
Until the next time keep on rockin y’all
