It’s been around five years I think since I last saw M.Ward and on that occasion it was solo acoustic. Tonight though he is joined by Aussie rockers aka The Undertakers providing the musical accompaniments to his main course.
It’s the perfect setting for M.Ward, cosy room, formerly Edwardian dance hall, moody red lighting which matches the music wonderfully.
Tonight’s show is a twentieth anniversary celebration of one his finest moments ‘Transfiguration of Vincent’ and also the release of his latest record ‘Supernatural Thing’ which after a couple of listens is another fine record and the new songs sit very comfortably alongside the oldies.
It's a nice blend of songs with the tone switching between acoustic and electric throughout to give the night a nice balance between light and heavy. The band are very good tonight providing the rhythm and backing vocals to many songs. What I think is often forgotten is how good a guitarist M.Ward is. He has a uniquely flamboyant finger picking style which is often a blur on the eyes.
So in summary a wonderful night of great songs performed by a top band and it was nice to hear ‘Helicopter’ and ‘Big Boat’ from the archives along with three new songs too and of course the stripped down version of ‘Lets Dance’.
Keep on laconic rockin’ y’all
