With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Just a couple today but some corkers for today’s trip down memory lane for you down the years.
2019, Adia Victoria, the Lexington, London
A last minute decision to attend this gig and what a wonderful night it was with the super talented Adia. Reviewed here at the time at the best small London venue The Lexington.
Just a mention with regard to this venue. Unlike some others they didn’t receive the full art council funding to keep them alive during lockdown and its touch and go on whether they will survive. Yes it’s a pub but at its heart it’s a live music venue and it would be truly sad if it wasn’t still around next year. I have no idea on the criteria on how some of these grants were dished out but there were reports of some festival organisers whose festival wasn’t even scheduled to take place this year receiving six and seven figure bailouts. Something doesn’t smell right there. Fingers crossed that I will be able to visit the Lex again real soon.
2014, Bob Mould, Village Underground, London
Not my favourite venue in London by any stretch but thankfully Bob blew away any concerns with an incendiary show full of old Husker Du songs a bit of Sugar and dose of solo stuff. All reviewed here at the time. So good to hear a large number of those old classics again.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon but with the new lockdown my last chance of a gig disappeared this month and I have now had my first gig of 2021 cancelled so that will take it to a full twelve months at least between gigs.
