With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
A busy day back down the years with three of the best country acts out there for today’s trip down memory lane for you down the years.
2017, Maren Morris, Shepherds Bush Empire, London
Morris’ star has certainly grown even in the three years since this gig. Various awards, part of the Highwomen she really is a talented singer songwriter. We were lucky to see her back then as I fully expect her next tour over here will be Brixton Academy sized venues. Fully reviewed this fabulous show here at the time.
2012, Ryan Bingham, Scala, London
Its Ryan Bingham one of my favourite male artists, still fairly early on in his career in the small room that is the Scala. It’s the ‘Tomorrowland’ tour which I’ll be honest isn’t one of my favourites.
That aside he’s with band tonight and as usual delivers an impeccable set running through the best of what he’s done so far. Fresh off the back of Golden Globe, Grammy and Oscar wins with ‘the Weary Kind’ it’s not gone to his head as he stays humble throughout and just gets on with playing impeccable country music with that unique gravelly voice. even this early in his career he already has a strong selection of classic songs upon which he will only build.
Brilliant as usual.
1999, Chuck Prophet, Underworld, London
Another day another Chuck gig. What more can I say about Chuck that I haven’t already said. I think I have seen him more than any other artist. He has retained quality control for over twenty five years and with no album to tour it was just a classic set in this rarely visited venue in Camden.
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon but with the new lockdown my last chance of a gig disappeared this month and I have now had my first gig of 2021 cancelled so that will take it to a full twelve months at least between gigs.
Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
