With the country still in the midst of lockdown and no sign of any live music in the foreseeable future if at all this year I thought I would take the opportunity to look back in the archives, sounds posh I know but it’s just an spreadsheet, and revisit gigs I attended on this day down the years. I will keep this going until I can attend my first gig again in person so hopefully this also brings back memories for my gig going chums who have joined me on this great musical journey down the years.
Just the two today for my trip down memory lane for you down the years and it’s a quickie.
1997, Matthew Sweet, Astoria 2, London
I am guessing that this was the ‘Blue Sky on Mars’ tour and John and Graham would have been in attendance. I have a vague recollection that Neal Casal might have been the support but I could be mixing that up with another gig there. Sadly, I have no lasting memory of this show. Everything Sweet does will always be compared to the ‘Girlfriend’ album and the fantastic show at the Mean Fiddler. Looking at other setlist from around then it’s an even mix from his four albums to date. Frankly as long as he always does ‘Girlfriend’, ‘Divine Intervention’ and ‘Evangeline’ I will be happy. We didn’t go the Astoria 2 many times and alas sadly like all the venues in that part of town has now been demolished.
2018, Joan as Police Woman, Omeara, London
I reviewed it at the time here and there’s not more to add. Just that is was hot too damned hot and that uncomfortableness really impacts the enjoyment of the gig
That’s it for today’s trip down memory lane. Here’s hoping we can get to some form of normality soon. Support your small local venues and smaller artists in these difficult times, stay safe and keep on rockin y’all.
