A year after seeing these guys in the tiny Windmill pub in Brixton we are back again with this two drum, three guitar and bass driven band from Dublin in the excellent Lexington venue.
It’s a small stage for this six piece but that didn’t really matter as each of the three guitarists/vocalists spent a lot of time prowling the venue amongst the crowd.
Thumper are back with a bang with a fine debut album ‘Delusion of Grandeur’ which is straight into my top albums of the year. It’s a low key start as the band setup up their own gear on stage. Then it’s as if someone just presses the go button because they start at a hundred miles an hour and continue at that speed for a breathless hour.
I am sure that this show must have made an impact on the Richter scale such is the volume and intensity of performance. The crowd took a little bit to get going but finished with a flourish with a mini mosh pit in front of the stage for the last twenty minutes of the show.
Often described as post punk they are much more than that and the new album is more ‘Endless Boogie’ than ‘Fontaines’ for example. Its tuneful melodic groove based rock with many tracks coming in way over five minutes and the twin drum attack adds to the depth of the wall of sound in the room.
Most of the album is played and it was banger after banger, highlight after highlight. A stunning rock show from start to finish, the sound in the room was spot on and Thumper have now become a must see whenever they are in town.
Keep on psych punk rockin’ y’all.
