I always like to go to at least one new venue every year and this one is #166 in my gig history. I think it’s recently been refurbed and it’s just off Camden High Street next to the Blues Kitchen and seems to specialise in soul, R&B bands.
Also new for me tonight are the band, The Harlem Gospel Travelers. It’s their first UK show and there’s a decent crowd in for the early start. I admit a couple of months ago I hadn’t heard of them but an advert for their Eli Paperboy Reed produced second album ‘Look Up’ popped up and that was enough of a recommendation for me.
We were not to be disappointed. It was a great evening of gospel, soul, R&B soaked music. Its got a seventies feel but with a contemporary edge. The band were excellent without being too showy but they laid down the foundations for the three front men whose range, energy and harmonies need to be seen to be believed. It’s a high impact show and I left the venue exhausted just watching these guys perform.
The range in their voices is incredible from bass to tenor, falsetto and seemingly beyond and with certain songs they lull you with a delicate beginning to then let rip and soar through the ceiling. It’s a proper show with some synchronised dancing in places but it’s a feel good show full of bright tunes that keep you constantly moving and defy anyone to have stood still throughout the show. Next time lets hope they can have a spotlight for the guy on left also.
A wonderful show with a great new band and ones to catch next time in town.
Keep on Gospel, blues, rockin’ y’all
