Always good to be back at the iconic 100 Club despite that annoying pillar in the middle of the venue that restricts your view of the whole band but hey it’s keeping the roof on so all good. Tonight it’s Ash performing in support of War Child. I’ve always liked their tunes but never seen them live so didn’t pass on this opportunity. Despite their thirty years in the business they had never played 100 Club so it was extra special for them too.
And boy did they make the most of it. It was a good job that pillar was there because I am sure they would have blown the roof off such was the velocity of noise that hit us from note one and carried on relentlessly for eighty or so minutes. It’s an amazing cacophony of noise coming from a three piece but played with great musicality, no thrash just good old fashioned rock music with some killer hooks on all of those tracks we know so well.
The band had all of the usual rock credentials from Tim Wheeler’s Flying V guitar, to the time perfect beat from drummer Rick McMurray and the impressive catalogue of rock poses from bassist Mark Hamilton.
With a recent record to plug there’s a few from that release but of course it’s the oldies that steal the show so hats off to ‘Shining Light’, ‘Girl from Mars’, ‘Burn baby burn’, ‘Kung Fu’ and many more.
With ears ringing well into the next day this will definitely go down as one of the loudest rock and roll shows I have seen.
Cobwebs duly blown away next up is probably a more sedate affair with Tyler Childers.
Keep on heavy pop rockin’ y’all
