I saw and reviewed Margo only four months ago and it’s a big step up in venue size tonight at the sold out show at the always excellent Islington Assembly Hall. Margo’s husband Jeremy Ivey opened the night and the joins her on stage periodically throughout her set adding guitars, vocals and harmonica.
It’s both Dolly Parton and Janis Joplin’s birthdays today and Price acknowledges both with covers of ‘Jolene’ and ‘Mercedes Benz’. The rest of the set is most of her debut solo album and assorted covers. The band are as tight as ever although with the bigger venue you lost a little of the intensity we had at the Scala. But that’s not to diminish Margo’s power and part of the success process will be to fill these bigger stages metaphorically speaking.
Highlights were ‘Hurtin (on the bottle)’ and ‘Four years of chances’ which really showcased her vocal range and driving force of the band. At a time with so many great female country artists Price is right up there with the best. As well as along with the likes of Isbell, Simpson and Bingham she is leading the way in new country and its new found popularity certainly this side of the pond.
Keep on country rockin y’all
