Despite whatever name this venue currently has it will always be the Odeon to me especially as it is the place of my first ever gig. Tonight it’s folkie ethereal pop with Weyes Blood. Before I start I will address the obvious comparison here. Her voice is the absolute ringer for Aimee Mann and this is no more evident on the only upbeat song in the set ‘Everyday’. There are shades too of Karen Carpenter in there but its Mann’s timbre and tone that is most evident.
That comparison aside she is very much her own artist. The set is moodily dressed with candelabra and subtle lights giving the effect of a gothic castle with Natalie drifting around the stage in a caped white dress as if a ghostly spirt haunting the stage.
The set draws heavily for 2019’s ‘Titanic Rising’ and last year’s excellent ‘And in the darkness, Hearts aglow’ but there’s room for two of the stand out tracks from ‘Front row set to Earth’ too.
Switching from guitar to piano effortlessly she is obviously an accomplished musician buts it’s that voice that’s the star of the show. It’s haunting, bewitching, beguiling and often choral in its depth that’s only further highlighted by the set design. We later find out that she is on five different medicines to fight a cold but you would never know given how clear her voice was.
It’s a beautiful evening of fine folky pop and you can’t help yourself from being entranced by her aura the whole show.
Keep on folky pop rockin’ y’all
