To all my music loving and gig going friends, this is first of a series of gig and new music reviews. Lucero, The Scala, Sunday 27th April. Not the most rock and roll night of the week but if you needed the cobwebs blown away these guys delivered. They rocked like b@$tards. They sit somewhere between the Gaslight Anthem and Drive by Truckers. On record its Americana at its best, great songs, a mix... of electric and acoustic. Live, a twin guitar attack, obligatory crazy bass player, subtle keyboards with a hard core following, singing back every word, is a melee of crowd surfing, mosh pit, stage diving madness. Band end up in the crowd for the encore, Frank Turner joins them on stage. Broken strings, completely forgetting lyrics to one song couldn't take away form the experience. Brilliant. Made a middle age rocker feel 25 again. Be difficult to top this year, you have been warned Jack White, War on Drugs, Isbell, Hiss Golden Messenger and the others. G.
A fifty something musing over the things that matter but mainly gig reviews
