hitting the rock peak with black mountain

Thursday 17th November. Tufnell Park Dome. Black Mountain. On a chilly November night in North London we make our way from Camden to the Dome. It’s a biggish venue which is wide rather than long with good sights from anyway and never seems too crowded.

Black Mountain are a Canadian rock band and the set tonight draws heavily from their latest album IV which is certainly a contender for album of the year for me.

They are a groove band in the mould of War on Drugs with a touch of Endless Boogie, although that’s really doing them a disservice as the there’s some great songs in there. The musicianship of the five piece cannot be questioned and the distinct vocal styles of band leader Stephen McBean and Amber Webber complement each other perfectly.  The new album seems to put the keyboards more to the fore and that’s no bad thing right from set opener ‘Over and Over’.

It’s a moodily lit stage tonight with the band’s faces barely visible and this adds to the intensity of the music with the extended guitar jams we are swept away by the wall of noise. Difficult to pick a highlight but ‘Stormy High’ was great as ever and I have a soft spot for new song ‘Florian Saucer Attack’.

A great night of rock music aboard the cosmic juggernaut whose controls are cranked to ten orbiting some way above the earth.

Keep on rockin y’all.
