I shudder to think the last time that I went into this nightclub in Kingston. At least twenty years I guess. So tonight is Irish punksters Fontaines D.C. on what was due to be an album launch show from last year that was postponed for obvious reasons.
It’s an expected short sharp 50 minute set tonight taking in tracks from both of their albums and it’s a breathless assault on the senses. Don’t write them off as a loud brash uncoordinated punk band as there’s a strong melody on many of their songs if you scratch below the surface.
Given our advancing years Andy and myself took the safe option of the first level balcony to take in the show rather than braving the carnage that is the mosh pit below us. Back to the stage and you can’t keep your eyes off of lead singer Grian Chatten who is a bundle of frustrated energy and a cross between Ian Curtis and Iggy Pop constantly on the move wrapped in his own world.
Its brilliant stuff and certainly blew any Monday cobwebs away. Highlights for me are probably ‘Too Real’ and ‘Boys in the better land’ from their first album, the latter of which is still one of my favourite songs from 2019.
Keep on punk rockin y’all
