Obviously, I have never been to Slim’s before but was really impressed with the venue. It was a good size with clear sight lines to the stage from everywhere, easy access to the bar and excellent sound. A lot of London venues could certainly take note.
I first saw the Felice Brothers at a crazy show at the Luminaire in London in 2007 which lives long in the memory. It’s a different band now with a more mature sound and the last two albums have been excellent. They are touring in support of their new album ‘Life in the Dark’ and the set draws heavily from it with tracks picked from the previous releases thrown in.
Their sound is a mix of straight country, Americana and rock and they remind me a lot of The Avett Brothers especially with their on stage musicianship, harmonies and energy. Vocals are shared around the band to great effect but it is the sonic blend of guitar, accordion and fiddle that envelops you and takes you away from the city to a balmy night in the country with a bottle of whiskey.
Highlights for me are ‘Saturday Night’ and the always excellent ‘Cherry Licorice’. My guest tonight had never heard a note of the band before but thoroughly enjoyed the night and the band.
Will definitely be checking these guys out again when they cover over the England next year.
Keep on rockin y’all.
